White House Reveals Federal Employee Job Cuts as Funding Gap Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to communities across the country,” said a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups sought a court injunction to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official ordered the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

These terminations occurred on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
