Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
New research reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such treatments should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
