A large-scale search and recovery mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of missing sailing vessels transporting relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Military Rescue Efforts Initiated

Mexico has deployed naval assets and search planes to search for the missing boats, which were had on board a minimum of nine sailors, according to a official statement.

The boats had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Relief to Cuba

Cuba has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation grapples with multiple national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable navigational gear and communication devices," a spokesperson involved in the effort said.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their consular staff.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had transported a significant amount of donated goods to the country.

That boat, called "a modern Granma" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Larger International Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led efforts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.

Global bodies have since warned of "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than fifty thousand surgical procedures postponed in Cuba due to power shortages.

Diplomatic measures have increased lately, with comments from different representatives emphasizing the complex state of bilateral relations.

Responding to previous proposals, a prominent government figure declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The Mexican navy stated it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to locate the vessels and ensure the security of the sailors.

At this time, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
