The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of a few weeks, the American president started showing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to construct it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and rising, and this week a study predicted his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – truly, no other president would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As confusing as it is to observe the leader seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into a symbol of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense regarding him since they are skeptics or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically absolutely not the story of a mighty king appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to escape secret police. The child matures in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching is about love for others, especially for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a means to educate the assailant; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The obvious and direct fact that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a kind of radical love focused on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest Among Us
So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We must have to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities in US history.
