The Showrunner Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
