The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Details Its Use of Generative AI for New Project
The developer behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its next major project, generating significant hype within the gaming community. However, follow-up remarks from the company's figurehead have added nuance to the narrative, addressing the team's approach toward machine learning.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a latest clarification, Larian's director explained that the team is employing AI technology for particular ancillary functions. These involve developing presentation materials, producing early-stage concept art, and creating temporary copy.
Crucially, Vincke emphasized that the shipping content in the game will be authored solely by actual writers. "Our team is writing all the content manually," he said.
Larian is constantly growing our pool of concept artists and are actively forming writing teams.
As visual development is being specifically called out — we right now have over twenty artistic staff and have roles to fill for additional artists.
Everything we do is additive and aimed at letting our team spend additional energy on making content.
Any machine learning application applied correctly is additive to a artist's workflow, not a replacement for their talent.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The news of employing this technology initially provoked unease among some the fanbase. In response, Vincke provided more detail on social media.
"We use AI tools to gather inspiration, just like we use search engines and art books," he wrote. "During the conceptual planning process we use it as a simple sketch for composition which we then swap out with hand-crafted concept art."
He added, "Larian brings on talent for their unique talent, not for their willingness to follow what a machine suggests."
Three Pillars of Practical Application
Vincke had earlier detailed the company's focused strategy to machine learning, categorizing its use into key functions:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses refining animations, voice editing, and technical processes like retargeting animations.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using tools to rapidly prototype basic versions of gameplay ideas to validate concepts ahead of expensive production.
- Experimental Frontiers: Investigating how AI could eventually enhance new forms of gameplay, especially in creating player-driven narratives in a detailed game universe.
He specifically affirmed that central narrative disciplines — such as writing — are are absolutely not fields where the studio is replacing artistic talent. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these exact positions.
"We are not launching a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not considering trimming down teams to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
