The first new treatments for gonorrhoea in decades are being viewed as a "huge turning point" in the battle against drug-resistant strains of the bacteria, according to researchers.

A Worldwide Health Concern

The sexually transmitted infection are increasing globally, with figures suggesting more than 82 million infections per year. Especially elevated rates are reported in Africa and countries within the World Health Organization's designated area, which encompasses Mongolia and China to New Zealand. In England, cases have reached a record high, while rates across Europe in 2023 were significantly elevated compared to those in 2014.

Public health authorities are deeply concerned about the rise in drug-resistant strains. The global health body has designated it as a "critical concern". Ongoing monitoring revealed that the effectiveness of key first-line drugs like cefixime and ceftriaxone increased dramatically between 2022 and 2024.

A Pair of Novel Therapies Secure Clearance

Zoliflodacin, also known as a brand name, was cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration in recent days for treating gonorrhoea. This disease can lead to major issues, including the inability to conceive. Scientists anticipate that specific application of this new drug will help delay the spread of drug resistance.

Another new antibiotic, originating from the drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, was also approved in the same week. This drug, which is also used to treat urinary tract infections, was proven in research to be able to combat drug-resistant strains of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

An Innovative Approach to Creation

This new treatment emerged from a new, not-for-profit approach for drug creation. The charitable organization Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership partnered with the drug firm Innoviva to see it through.

“This milestone represents a major breakthrough in the therapy of superbug gonorrhoea, which until now has been outpacing medical innovation.”

Research Study Results and Global Access

As per results released by a prominent scientific publication, the new drug cured more than 90% of cases of the STI. This establishes an equal footing with the typical regimen, which involves a dual-drug approach. The study included hundreds of participants from multiple nations including Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand and the US.

Through the arrangement of its collaboration, GARDP has the authority to make available and distribute the drug in a wide range of low-income and middle-income countries.
