LA Experiences Historic High Temperatures Just Days Following Major Winter Storm.
In the wake of significant rainfall that led to inundation across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now confronting unusually high weather for this time of year.
Record-Setting Heat
On Friday midday, the mercury reached 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in central LA, as reported by weather officials. This exceeds the old record for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was set just last year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were labeled on NWS maps for the region.
Safety Advisories
Authorities stated that Friday's conditions posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice suggested:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This dramatic increase in heat follows closely after a powerful winter storm that battered the region earlier in the week. That storm unleashed high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to mountainous regions, causing flash flood warnings for countless residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also resulted in a large avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
The outlook suggests a cooldown is expected. The heat were forecast to drop to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in downtown LA by overnight.
Other locales that hit the 90-degree mark featured Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were expected to see the upper eighties.
For the weekend, central LA can expect weather in the 80s, with a further cooldown on tap for the week ahead.
