Detonations and Low-Flying Planes Heard in Venezuelan Capital Caracas

Witness testimonies emerged of numerous blasts and the roar of low-altitude jets in Caracas in the small hours of the weekend. The event has prompted claims from Venezuela's government and requests for global scrutiny.

Venezuela Accuses United States of Attack

Venezuela's socialist government has blamed the Washington of what it calls "imperialist aggression," claiming that ex- President Trump reportedly authorized attacks against the South American country. In an formal declaration, the authorities stated that strikes had targeted the capital and three other regions: Miranda state, La Guaira state, and Aragua.

"The sole aim of these strikes is to take control of our nation's key assets, in particular its crude oil and minerals," the statement said.

Caracas called on the world to denounce the strikes, which it termed a "blatant breach of international law" that placed numerous of civilians in danger.

Reports of Blasts and Military Bases Hit

Residents reported experiencing approximately seven powerful blasts around the middle of the night in the morning. Citizens in different neighborhoods allegedly ran into the streets outside.

"The earth trembled. It was frightening. We experienced explosions and planes in the distance," said one local.

Plumes of smoke was seen billowing from two army bases in Caracas: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base compound, where leader Maduro is believed to have a residence.

Regional Reaction

The leader of bordering Colombia, Gustavo Petro, stated on social media that "Right now they are attacking Caracas... bombing it with rockets." He called for an swift emergency session of the Security Council.

Colombia, which just became a member of the UNSC, announced it would activate security protocols at its border with its neighbor.

Preceding Events

The alleged attacks are preceded by a months-long campaign of pressure by the United States against the Maduro administration. Beginning in last summer, authorities reported a significant US military presence off Venezuela's northern coast and a series of strikes on boats linked to narco-trafficking.

Venezuela's government has declared "a state of emergency" and commanded all national defense measures to be implemented. It has also urged its supporters to take to the streets and "reject this imperialist attack."

American officials and the Pentagon did not immediately responded to inquiries for clarification regarding the allegations.
