Democrats Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Sparked the Debate
The clip, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic congress members who in the past served in defense or security capacities.
"Like us, you all swore an vow to defend and support this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our governing document aren't just from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can decline improper directives, you must reject illegal orders. No one has to follow orders that violate the statutes or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Angry Reaction
The clip seemed to trigger a angry reaction from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a unified declaration censuring the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all worked our country with exceptional national pride and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to ensure the security of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme digital publications and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Officials' Strong Response
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also published a declaration.
"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who love this country and took an pledge to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we intend to honor it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that important responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and responsibility to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "All citizens must come together and condemn the president's demands for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for moral clarity."
Further Governmental Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."
He continued: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "It is very risky, you have important representatives of Congress telling troops to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The GOP official also reportedly stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the offense of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and establish all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the representative stated. "We see active officials of the federal government who worked together to orchestrate a video message to members of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the executive's legal commands."
She said: "The purity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
