Catherine's Yearly Festive Service of Carols Spotlights Community Volunteers

Her Royal Highness has organised her customary Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will hear a selection of carols, music and readings from stars like award-winning actors.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The focus of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Performance and Potential

Those coming to the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the former royal to widen access to music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been supported by the charity, with grants helping towards musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," she stated. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Sisterly Duo

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a young hero award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for community pantries.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
