Battlefield 6's Casual Playlist Ignites Intense Debates Over Bots, XP Rewards, and Queue Times

Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh playlist titled Relaxed Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough format but features several key changes:

  • Every squad has only eight real players, with the remaining filled by AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities performed by real players grant full XP, while bot actions offer reduced XP.
  • Only two locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
  • Elements like Player tags, accolades, and career stat updates are disabled.

So essentially, this mode delivers on its name: it offers a casual take of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think there's nothing wrong, as it gives more options for gamers looking for alternative methods to enjoy the title. However, if video games have taught us anything, it's that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, many BF6 fans are upset.

Player Reactions: Anger to Praise

"People want real players. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," states one reply to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking concept," says a different user. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user remarks, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and another details all the issues they believe to be broken in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, adjust aiming after sprinting, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."

On the other hand, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's very fun to practice, real players keep it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are players who have lives and don't play this game all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," adds another. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and someone else praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."

Valid Concerns and Community Input

Despite the support, there are constructive reasons to complain about the new mode. A few folks have highlighted that it will make queue times more extended for different playlists due to the large amount of options in the game already. Similarly, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the current modes. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a required amount of human gamers, even though it primarily centers on combat against bots.

Lastly, a major grievances is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that got canned when they tried to eliminate XP farming from the system. So this new playlist feels like the community compromising in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. Another describes this addition as the devs "dropping the ball so hard, I had great enjoyment in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"

Looking Ahead: Will Changes Occur?

Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything so far with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and responding to feedback. Assignments that were overly hard were adjusted very quickly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, should analytics indicates this new playlist is underperforming to their expectations, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
