As Beachgoers Fled Attack, Viral Photo Shows Lifeguard Dashing ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, describes the famous coast as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, noticed loud noises reverberating around the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her apartment, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display made it clear trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the avenue, conversing with a pair who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone moving up behind her. It was a rescuer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He moved into something that certainly every instinct would instruct you to move in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully maximum effort sprinting.”

A Symbol of Courage Amidst Crisis

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of instances of courage in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, police and paramedics caring for dozens of victims.

Collective Response and Support

Doolan’s story was just one of many to be shared by the community, with the beach facility next to the scene of the attack transforming into a impromptu medical station. It was shared that other team members were also seen responding bravely, such as entering the water to assist people who were struggling.

After the events, comments of support circulated widely. An online statement conveyed thanks for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “goodness will always conquer evil”.

The group of rescuers published a message, explaining they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your kind messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the care for our personnel,” the organization commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the hope that it helps those impacted.”

Official Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many full-time lifeguards, stated that the team acted heroically from the second the violence began right into late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional narratives, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is remarkable,” commented a council representative.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in ensuring our iconic coastlines safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the horror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is important that we consider just how much positivity we have seen in the midst of such evil.”
