Formula 1 has introduced the simplified language that will be used to describe the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The championship is introducing what is considered the most significant technical shift in its long history starting in 2026, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The new power units, which retain the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a greatly enhanced battery power, driving key advancements in the cars' aerodynamics.

During grand prix events, drivers will tactically deploy electrical energy – potentially on hot laps – to achieve the best performance.

Broad surveys were carried out with a diverse audience, including new, casual and core fans, to understand which phrases would aid comprehension of the central aspects of the 2026 changes.

The primary aim was to render a series of complex technical aspects of the racing as straightforward as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, initial designations for specific components – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in favor of descriptive names that clearly indicate the actual function of the technology.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that drivers will have increased agency to make decisions regarding energy deployment, harvesting, and conservation.

The upcoming changes mandate a set of functions that will be visually displayed on TV overlays to enhance the viewers' comprehension of the race battle.

• Attack Mode: This takes over from the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a short boost of battery power accessible when a car is less than a second the car ahead to facilitate an overtake.
• Extra Push Mode: This is a manual power boost from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It provides the pilot peak output at the push of a button.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be used with calculation, as the available electrical charge is capped.

• Active Aerodynamics: Both the front and rear wings adjust their angles – flattening on the high-speed sections for reduced drag and increased velocity, and sealing in the bends for maximum downforce.
• Energy Harvesting: The system can recharge the energy store with power recovered from braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in certain corners where only limited engine output is used.

Car Design Evolution

The vehicles for the new era will be more compact and lighter relative to current models, with a wheelbase cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight decreased by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is projected to decrease by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will naturally regain performance as they develop their cars.

Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The cars will feature moveable wing elements – both wings will open on the straight sections to reduce drag and increase straightline speed and revert into place for optimal grip in corners.

Tyres will keep the current rim size, but the actual tyres will be slimmer, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

2026 Engine Regulations

The 2026 engines will have an near-equal balance in horsepower generated by the ICE and the ERS, a rise from about 20% electrical in the current formula.

The hybrid system is streamlined through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey device that harvested power from the exhaust turbo.

Cars will be mandated to operate on carbon-neutral fuel, created from biomass or synthetic production methods.
